Denmark Vesey was born enslaved in Charleston and later organized one of the most ambitious slave revolts in American history. His planned uprising and connection to the abolitionist movement reshaped laws across the South and fueled fear among slaveholders.
David Ruggles was a leading abolitionist, an Underground Railroad organizer, and a key figure in the fight against slavery. He helped hundreds escape bondage, challenged kidnappers, and opened the first Black-owned bookstore in the United States.
